Passion Fruit Facts
What is it?
Native to South America, passion fruit is currently cultivated in most tropical and subtropical regions including South America, Hawaii, and South Africa. Purple passion fruit is dark-purple to nearly black in color. It is rounded or egg-shaped, approximately 2 inches long, and weighs between 1 and 1.5 ounces. Yellow passion fruit is deep yellow in color but is larger than the purple variety. The fruit contains numerous small black seeds. Each seed is individually surrounded by deep-orange-like colored sacs that contain the juice.
What is so good about it?
The worldwide appeal of passion fruit is ever-growing. In fact, Europe has been using passion fruit in products for over 30 years and is an essential flavor in their beverage industry. Passion fruit is rich-flavored and pleasantly aromatic. The juice is highly flavor concentrated making it an economic fruit to blend with other fruits. It has the unique ability to mask inexpensive filler juices and off-flavors, leading to better tasting products without significantly impacting cost. From a nutritional perspective, 1 cup of passion fruit juice (247 g) is an excellent source of vitamin A, vitamin C, niacin, and potassium. It is also a good source of riboflavin and magnesium.
